Firstly, here are the 3 common sheet cake sizes used for baking, match with the suitable cake box size.
For a full sheet cake (16*24 inch), the matching cake box is 17*25 inch.
For a half sheet cake (13*17 inch), the matching cake box is 14*18 inch.
For a quarter sheet cake (9*13 inch), the matching cake box is 10*14 inch.
These are for rectangular cakes, but we also frequently produce boxes for round and square cakes. Our standard sizes for these include as below:
As 8*8-inch box (fits the 6-inch or 7-inch cakes)
As 10*10-inch box (fits the 8-inch or 9-inch cakes)
As 12*12-inch box (fits the 10-inch or 11-inch cakes)
As 14*14-inch box (fits the 12-inch or 13-inch cakes)
Pls kindly noted:Both round and square cakes can use the same-sized boxes.
Now, let me show how to choose the right height and material for the cake box:
--Cake box height:
This depends on the number of cake layers and the complexity of its decorations.
For a single layer cake, a height of 4–5 inch (for example, 10*14*4 inch or 8*8*4 inch) is usually sufficient.
For a two-layer cake, we recommend an 8–10-inch height (for example 10*10*8 inch or 14*18*8 inch).
As for three-layer cake requires a taller box—at least 12 inch high (for example 12*12*12 inch or 19*14*12 inches).
It should be noted that large rectangular cakes are rarely made in multiple layers, as they’re easy to tipping over; they’re typically single-layer. If your cake has tall decorations (like cake toppers, fans, or decorated balls etc), you will need a taller box.
--Cake box material:
White cardboard (350gsm or 400gsm) the surface is smooth and easy to be printed, making it a favorite among bakers(especially for bakery shops). It is cost-effective and works well for standard single-layer cakes, but it has weaker load-bearing capacity—so it’s not ideal for heavy cakes or long-distance shipping.
Ccorrugated board is sturdy and durable, suitable for heavy cakes or long-distance delivery. Popular styles include the cake boxes with separate lids or the cake box with handle-equipped boxes. Most clients opt for minimal printing on these; common color options are white outside with brown inside, or double-sided white.
--Other factors:
The size of your cake board and its thickness matter too: a 12mm thickness cake drum requires a slightly larger box, while a 2–3mm-thin cake base board works with standard-sized boxes. Shipping costs and storage should also be considered: white cardboard boxes are lighter weight and easy to folded, so they’re cheaper to ship and easier to store. Corrugated boxes, by contrast, can’t be folded as a small part and take up more space, leading to higher shipping costs.
