- What is a cake drum?
Cake drums are usually a layer of foil covered card or card foam board (like cake boards, you can make them in other colors, but silver is most common), they are about 12-13 mm/½ inch thick . They are sturdy and usually larger than a cake board.
- Do you need a cake drum?
If you are stacking any heavy cakes or cakes larger than 6 inches in diameter, you should definitely use a plate or drum between layers. Even for smaller cakes, it is recommended to use them in layers if you plan to stack more than two.
- What are cake drums made of?
The cake board is made of thick corrugated cardboard or double grey cardboard or MDF. Cake drums are 6mm-10mm thick, but can be thicker than that. Double grey cardboard cake drums are great for decorating cake boards, but are generally more expensive than corrugated cake boards, so they are not used as often as MDF boards.
